Mountain Festival Celebrates Appalachian Lifestyle

Protecting and preserving mountain history through a heritage themed festival. A full day celebration of traditional mountain craft, food, and entertainment. Demonstrations of Appalachian life skills & crafts, storytelling, mountain music & clogging, home-style food vendors. 10am–5pm Main Street.

Don't miss the opportunity to see how things have been crafted by Appalachian folks for generations. These skills have been passed down for generations and are now going to be demonstrated during this one-of-a-kind event. In addition, there will be a Civil War Commemorative Weekend filled with demonstrations of musket firing and war tactics, as well as lectures on the skirmish here in Waynesville, North Carolina. For our winter special, we wanted to do something that no other

bed and breakfast has done. We're offering a significant discount

on our room prices and providing, instead, options for breakfast,

snacks and beverages available any time you'd like. We're giving

amenities that they really want at our Asheville area bed and

Our room prices will be reduced to $99 for Pine Needles, $109

for Hickory Hills, The Palms and Pinehurst and $119 for the

Winter Getaway to Waynesville, North Carolina

While these pictures were the scene at our Waynesville, North Carolina Bed and Breakfast two years ago, we just had our daffodils bloom this winter because it has been so warm. The poor things think its already spring!

The warmer weather has also extended our hiking season, here in the Smoky and Blue Ridge Mountains of Western North Carolina. The great thing about hiking in the winter is NO BUGS!! The temperatures are also more condusive to longer hikes in the fresh, clean, crisp air up in the mountains. You'll see some of the most beautiful mountain views you've ever seen.

This is one I captured while hiking a trail along a ridge in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park near Cataloochee Valley. Of course, I had to find a break in the trees to see this due to all the leaves. Not such a problem this time of year! There are so many hiking trails in this area its hard to determine which ones to tackle first. They range in difficulty from easy to strenuous with a wide variety of vistas, waterfalls and natural formations to see.

Not much into hiking? Well if you like to snow ski, Cataloochee Ski Area makes it's own snow so you can enjoy skiing, snowboarding or tubing throughout the winter season.

There's also the historic train out of nearby Bryson City on the Great Smoky Mountain Railroad. Your ride will take you by the actual train used in the movie "The Fugitive" starring Harrison Ford. You'll also ride into the Nantahala Gorge and see sights only visible from the train. You can even arrange to have lunch during your excursion!

What about going to Harrah's Casino in Cherokee? You'll find world class entertainment, great home cooking at Paula Deen's restaurant and all the poker, black jack and slot machines you could ever want.

Come see for yourself why the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most visited park in the country. You'll come to the area for the scenery, but stay for the adventure! North Carolina Arboretum in Asheville

We recently took a trip into Asheville to experience the North Carolina Arboretum. All I can say is WOW! What a great place to see some of the most beautiful plants, flowers and trees that North Carolina has to offer. As an added bonus, the Arboretum is showcasing their incredible bonsai exhibit with a huge variety of trees and arrangements.

The Arboretum is a 434-acre natural treasure with 65 acres of cultivated gardens and 10 miles of hiking and biking trails. As we toured the gardens, subtle hints of fall could be seen among the trees. There is even an art display by an artist that combines photos of plants and trees superimposed on a background consisting of that plant's cellular makeup. Just my cup of tea!

This is a must see for those who enjoy nature, the outdoors and all the beauty that North Carolina has to offer. If you go on the first Tuesday of the month, parking and admission are FREE!!

First Signs of Fall in Waynesville, North Carolina

I was taking a stroll around our Waynesville, North Carolina Bed and Breakfast when I happened to notice signs of the coming fall season. Although I know that summer technically lasts until September 21st, tell that to the trees of western North Carolina. Up here in the mountains, the temperatures are already declining and the evening temperatures are downright chilly!

International Dance Festival in Waynesville, North Carolina

Its that time of year again and the Folkmoot International Dance Festival is almost here! There will be folk music and dancing from countries all over the world. Its an exciting event that is both entertaining and enlightening. The festival begins July 21st and ends with the International Parade through the streets of downtown Waynesville, NC on July 31st.

Mountain Biking In The Blue Ridge Breakaway Event

The Blue Ridge Breakaway is an annual cycling event on August 20, 2011 in support of the initiatives of the Haywood County Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber services the towns of Waynesville, Maggie Valley, Lake Junaluska, Canton and Clyde.

The Blue Ridge Breakaway is an adrenaline pumping ride through county lanes, scenic byways and the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. The ride begins at the Lake Junaluska Conference and Retreat Center which is conveniently located off of Interstate 40 and Highway 23/74.

With a variety of routes specifically designed for riders of all skill levels, the Blue Ridge Breakaway is sure to please. Beginners and avid cyclists alike will find challenging rides to meet their individual needs. Registration for the 2nd Annual Blue Ridge Breakaway Opens March 1, 2011.

Lake Fontana Near Waynesville, North Carolina

If you're ever wondering what there is to do in the mountains of Western North Carolina, there's always boating on Lake Fontana. We just returned from an entire day of boating, picnicing and enjoying the wonderful sunshine out on Lake Fontana in Bryson City. What a great day! There's nothing like relaxing in the sunshine while lounging on a pontoon boat and taking in all the natural beauty of the surrounding mountains.

This is one of our favorite things to do when Dina's sister, Donna, comes in town for a visit. She's a little heavy on the throttle (she loves speed!) so, thank goodness, we rent a pontoon boat that keeps her in check. She still manages to get the nose of the pontoon boat up out of the water, though.

When it comes to the mountains of Western North Carolina, come for the scenery but stay for the adventure! Memorial Day Weekend Mountain Getaway

Why come to the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina for Memorial Day Weekend? First of all, its nice and cool here! Get out of that heat! Next, there's all the really cool stuff to do in the area. One of our recent guests, pictured above, went whitewater rafting. She also went on a canopy tour and did some zip lining. Not your thing? OK, there's also some great hiking trails nearby with various degrees of difficulty. Some of them take you to beautiful waterfalls or grassy knolls that overlook the Smoky Mountains. You could rent a pontoon boat and tour Lake Fontana. Or take a leisurely stroll around Lake Junaluska and view the "Walk of Roses".

Not an outdoors person? No problem, there's great shopping in downtown Waynesville (only a mile from our Inn!). The town of Waynesville is having its first Block Party of the year on May 28th. Main Street will be blocked off to traffic and there will be lots of mountain music, clogging, square dancing, food vendors and the shops will be open late. Into antiques? There are numerous antique stores and malls in the area. Asheville is only 25 minutes away with additional shopping and dining experiences. Don't forget about the Biltmore Estate!

If you just like to view the beauty of the area, there are drives along the Blue Ridge Parkway (only 4 miles from our Inn), into the Great Smoky Mountain National Park or into Pisgah National Forest (lots of waterfalls in this area!). We even have Loop Tour brochures to make sure you get back "home" to the Inn in time for supper!

Spring Festivals and Events in the Smoky Mountains

Spring is visible everywhere you look, here in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. In celebration of spring, Waynesville, North Carolina has many upcoming festivals and events that might interest those traveling in this area in the near future.

Our first events take place on April 30th. If you love chocolate, don't miss the 12th annual Taste of Chocolate event at the Maggie Valley Club from 6-9pm. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door. If you're an art lover, you'll love Quick Draw at the Laurel Ridge Country Club. Noteworthy artists create a collectable piece of art in one hour, while event spectators tour the ongoing process. May not only brings beautiful flowers but also the return of downtown Waynesville's Block Parties and Art After Dark. Art After Dark, starting May 6th, has downtown Waynesville Galleries & Studios remaining open late the First Friday Evening each month, May through December. Spring Has Sprung!

No matter how many times I see it, I still get excited over the onset of spring in the Smoky Mountains of Western North Carolina. We are already seeing buds on most of the trees, blooming daffodils and the pansies are going crazy! Spring is definitely my favorite time of year because it is as if our little part of the world is going through an awakening after a long, winter slumber.

I've noticed, after looking up at the mountain range just behind our Bed & Breakfast, that fall creeps down the mountains from above and spring creeps up the mountains from below. Its quite an amazing thing to see. Every morning I step outside to see what other blooms are out, birds have returned or critter is awake from hibernation.

You have seen them before but have you ever been on one? Now is your
chance to zoom along the golf course by Segway. Moving Sidewalk Tours will
help you along the way. ( $12 per 15 minute tour)

3:00 PM - 6:00 PM Star Chef Challenge

A single elimination culinary skills recipe and preparation contest
featuring some of the best Chefs and Restaurants in Western North Carolina.
Entrants will submit recipes using NC grown ingredients prior to the
competition. Recipes will be reviewed by a panel of professional chefs and
food critics and the top four will be invited to the Fire & Ice, Top Chef
Challenge to prepare and present their dish. The top two recipes will be
chosen by a panel of judges and will compete head to head in a 45 minute
cook-off, where they will be given a mystery box of ingredients to prepare
the "Stars of NC Farms" Top Chef Dish. (Included in entry price)

Fall Leaf Color Update from Waynesville, NC

We're coming up on the middle of October and the news is good for those coming to the mountains of Western North Carolina later in the month. The leaves have just begun to change colors and we just had some rain with colder weather over the next week. That should help sustain the leaf color through the end of October into the beginning of November! Its not too late to make the trip to see this magical event in the Smoky Mountains. The picture above is the view of the mountains from our back patio on October 12th. As you can see, there's still a ways to go for peak color in the mountains.

Fall Color on the Blue Ridge Parkway near Waynesville, NC

We had the luxury of a half day off and wanted to see how much fall color we could find up in the mountains of Western North Carolina. So we hopped up onto the Blue Ridge Parkway and headed toward the Great Smoky Mountains National Park in Cherokee, NC. These pictures were taken today, October 5th, 2010. We wanted to give everyone planning a trip up here to see the leaves a first-hand look at how far the color has come along up to this point. As you can see, it has a ways to go before we reach the peak of leaf color season. This picture was taken at around 6,000 feet.

We then went on to Waterrock Knob at mile marker 451 on the Parkway. This was the scene as we enjoyed an impromtu picnic lunch today at Waterrock Knob overlook. The temperatures up there didn't reach much higher than 41 and with the wind whipping around I'm sure the wind chill brought it into the upper 30's!! It won't be long before the leaves start to really kick in with color. As it is, we've already had our first frost warning in Waynesville, NC at our bed & breakfast and had to cover one or two tender plants.

Asheville Area Tops Leaf Peeping List

According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, TripAdvisor.com announced its top 10 fall foliage destinations with the Asheville area as the No. 1 place to see the fall leaves. The list is based on a TripAdvisor.com survey of more than 2,300 travelers.

Calling the Asheville area's scenery "spectacular" for views found along drives such as the Blue Ridge Parkway, the city beat out second-place Boston of New England foliage fame. In third place was nearby Gatlinburg, Tenn., just over the Great Smoky Mo untains from Western North Carolina.

The leaves at elevations of 6,000 feet or higher could reach peak color this weekend. Destinations such as Mount Mitchell, just outside of Asheville, are showing wonderful color right now. However, lower elevations, like right here in quaint Waynesville, NC, are only showing slight signs of fall. The Phil Vassar Connection In Waynesville, NC

What a great week! I actually spoke with country music artist and songwriter Phil Vassar. His very dear friends, Toby and Carol just spent four days with us celebrating their anniversary and Toby's birthday. We met them last year when, by chance, Carol picked Brookside Mountain Mist Inn as her mountain getaway for their anniversary. Well, the rest is history because the four of us immediately hit it off.

Carol is incredibly crafty and made us a large throw for our couch (complete with kitties!) and, to top it all off, we are now the proud owners of a Phil Vassar bobble head! What more could we ask for?! We had a wonderful evening with them last night starting with burgers at the restaurant across the street and ending with a glass of wine out on our fireplace deck (tiki torches and all!). We've already forgiven Carol for attempting to burn down our new deck. You had to be there!

Dina and I have been country music fans for many, many years now. We are fortunate to have met Toby and Carol and, indirectly, Phil. They are truly wonderful people with alot of love in their hearts. We are proud to call them friends and hope, one day, to actually meet their best buddy, Phil Vassar. We're trying to get Phil to come and stay at our B&B in Waynesville, NC for some much needed R&R.
